Making History 40 Years Ago Tonight

40 years ago, August 8th, 1974, the nation was anticipating the resignation of President Richard M. Nixon for his participation in the Watergate scandal. Here is The CBS Evening News With Walter Cronkite broadcast from just a few hours before the inevitable:

Later that evening at 9:00PM EDT, the disgraced Nixon addressed the nation:

The following day the soon-to-be former president addressed the White House staff in a rambling speech:

It was an amazing time….and as President Gerald R. Ford stated, our long national nightmare was over.
